Currency, cards, M-PESA and what to tip — in actual numbers.
Currency
The Kenyan shilling (KES) is the local currency. Lodges, camps and tour operators usually quote in US dollars, and both are accepted at the properties on this site. Change money at a bank or a licensed bureau, never at the airport kerb.
Cards and cash
Cards work in Nairobi, at established lodges and at larger restaurants. Carry cash for markets, community visits, small cafés and tips. Notes should be clean and undamaged — worn dollar bills are often refused.
M-PESA
Kenya’s mobile money system is used everywhere and works with a local SIM. If you are travelling independently for part of your trip it is worth setting up; on a guided itinerary you will rarely need it.
What to tip
Tipping is expected but not aggressive. As a guide: USD 10–20 per day for a safari guide, USD 5–10 per day into the camp staff box, and around 10% in restaurants where service is not already included. Your planner will confirm what is customary at each property.
