You don’t watch the Mara. It surrounds you, and slowly you stop being a visitor.
There is a moment, usually on the first evening, when the noise of travel finally drops away. The engine cuts, the guide points, and a lioness moves through the grass thirty metres off. This is the safari everyone imagines — and Kenya delivers it more reliably than almost anywhere on earth.
When to go
The Great Migration reaches the Mara between July and October. The January-to-March dry season offers superb big-cat viewing with fewer vehicles, while the green season is quieter and beautiful.
How long you need
Give yourself a minimum of five nights on safari to justify the travel. A classic first trip pairs three nights in the Mara with two or three in Amboseli or on the coast.
